:Hospital history

Imam Reza (AS) hospital is one of the greatest hospitals in Mashhad. The construction of this complex, covering an area of 28.5 hectares with 28,500 m2 superstructure, was commenced in 1928 and the hospital opened its door officially in 1313 under the name of Shahreza hospital. Originally, it consisted of 100 beds and specialized wards for internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, pediatrics, infectious diseases, maternity wards, clinics, laboratories, radiology, dentistry, and animal dissection, among other departments. In 1945, otolaryngology ward was added and by 1948-49, the hospital admission capacity was increased to 250 beds.

Back in 1862, the hospital's surgical department was led by Dr. Bull Van. This compassionate Belgian doctor, who converted to Islam after observing the illuminating teachings of Islam, practiced medicine in this hospital for several years. In those years, there were 45 physicians at the hospital, including 1 dentist, 5 pharmacists, 18 MDs, 270 nurses and 5 midwives who handled the hospital’s medical affairs.

In 1975, by virtue of an agreement, Astan Qods drew up a 90-year transfer contract, according to which the hospital was entrusted to Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Henceforth, the hospital remained open as an educational and medical center under the administration of the university. According to extant statistics, the hospital had a capacity of 363 beds at that time.

At the peak of the glorious Islamic Revolution in 1977 and 1978, under the leadership of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the revolution, this hospital was one of the key shelters of fighters who combated the oppressive regime of Shah. In 1978, many revolutionary theorists and clerics of Khorasan, including the supreme leader of the revolution, Ayatollah Khamenei, were among the religious leaders who staged sit-ins in the educational complex to direct the agitated people of Khorasan and the academia. With the victory of the glorious Islamic Revolution in 1978, the name of Shah Reza was removed from the hospital title, substituted with the holy name of Imam Reza (AS).
